The Rain In Spain

Today, we hiked 13.5 miles from Caldas de Reis to Padron, Spain in the pouring rain.

Our norther route

It started the moment we left our hotel (before dawn) and continued for at least the next four hours.

Rain gear ready at dawn.

Unlike the song, the rain in Spain does not fall mainly on the plain. It falls in the mountains, the woods, the valleys, and definitely on the Camino!

A taste of our journey

We tried to combat the downpour with stops for hot drinks along the way. This really didn’t work, but it did allow is to try some of the local desserts, like Santiago Cake.

A Respit from the Downpour
But Mother Nature would have no part of it.

We arrived in Padron soaked, tired, and smelly. After a hot shower, we ventured into town to see some of the churches. The Cathedral was on a hill above the village and had a spectacular view in the sunshine.

I haven’t posted much about the food on this trip because it has been average in many places. But tonight we had a spectacular meal. I love steak au poive and the Galacians made an amazing one. The sauce was peppery and creamy all at the same time. The steak was juicy and cooked to perfection. I paired this with a Spanish Ribera wine, which was filled with red fruit notes. I topped off this savory meal with a green apple sorbet to end the evening on a cold, sweet note. M-m-m-m-m.

Tomorrow is our last day on the road. We are only 25 kms (16 miles) from Santiago di Compostela. Hopefully, the sun will shine for our hike to the Cathedral.

  1. Great video for full sound effects! At least you put that fancy rain suit to use! Hope I have cell signal for your final post tomorrow. Headed to Yosemite. Maybe the time zone change will be advantageous. I’m sure the last day will be bitter sweet Pete. I’m sad to see the end.
