Today we decided to spend a few hours in Assisi before hitting the road. So after a little sightseeing in the sunshine, we took a cab halfway to our next destination and started walking from there. We hiked 10 miles from Cannara to Gualdo Cattaneo, Italy in the pouring rain. My Fitbit says I took 20,900 steps, climber 154 flights of stairs, and burned 1,900 calories.

What it doesn’t say is that there was probably 3” of rain falling each hour. Seriously, the rain was so hard, I felt like I was getting a head massage!

After about 2 hours of walking in the rain, we decided to stop for a warm drink at s little town. I ordered a hot chocolate, but what I got was warm chocolate pudding. The barista didn’t use enough milk! It was good and reminded me of the chocolate pudding that my Aunt Mary used to make for me when I was a kid.

We did meet some interesting people today. First, there was a lovely group of Americans at the hotel who hailed from Worcester, Mass. (They would have called the rain “a wicked pisser”!) Next, we met a charming lady who owns a small restaurant in Cannara. She was very funny in that she sat down at our table to take our lunch order. (We thought she was going to eat with us too!) And lastly, we ran into our Swiss hiking friend, John Jacob, who happened into the same restaurant in Cannara.

When we finally arrived at our b&b, we found out that their kitchen was closed on Tuesdays. The owner bought us some supplies and I made dinner. Pasta sauce with pancetta and onion. (Battlefield conditions!)

Good night.
