A View from the Top … and the Bottom.

Today I want to talk about perspective. It is the way we see the world. And it shapes our impressions and feelings. I recall that Manila always looked best at night, so the poverty was obscured by the enveloping darkness. Some cities look best by day or when seen from offshore, like Paris from the Seine. Today, we explored the city of Porto, a hilly city on the banks of the Duro River in Portugal. We started by climbing 2 religious towers which punctuate the Porto skyline. Each had about 100 steps to the top, but the reward was some breathtaking panoramic views of this ancient city.

We also had a little fun, hanging around on the ledges to get a better view.

Goofing around on the clock tower.

After all this horseplay, we walked down to the river to see the city by boat. This perspective gave us the view of a city with a bustling wine business. Boats with the names of the preeminent growers were emblazed on the sails. The sun was shining and the wind was gently blowing, which made for a spectacular afternoon on the water. Even Stephen had a good time. (Note the smile on his face.)

One of the most interesting aspects of this city is that many of the churches and the cathedral are covered in stone and tile. It really adds a unique character to the architecture. The blue and white tile brings a vitality to the walls, which in other European cities can appear cold and lifeless by comparison.

Stephen and Juan Pablo enjoying the view.
Check out the cherubs with bulging eyes behind Joe and me. Freaky.

So wether you see it from the top or the bottom, Porto is a place not to miss. Tomorrow we start our trek northward. Stay tuned.

  1. Thank you Pete!  Love these posts.  And love Porto – the tile work!  Glad you could get your walking legs ready for the first long day tomorrow.  Hope it all goes well and your boots behave.
